Musical Archives

The Abbey of Stams owns around 3000 musical manuscripts as well as prints (many of them unique), mostly from the 18th and 19th century. They prove how important the abbey was in cultural matters. Apart from the music that was played during prayers, there were performances of chamber and symphonic music, and music theatre.

The musicians were either monks, servants or famous guests.

At the moment, the collection is being catalogued by musical historian Hildegard Herrmann-Schneider.

More than 8.100 records are available in RISM-OPAC www.rism.info (library siglum: A-ST).
